UW Bike Safety

The University of Washington Police have begun a new bicycle safety campaign to encourage more bicyclers to follow traffic laws along the Burke Gilman Trail.  Police have reported a high number of bikers ignoring traffic rules and threatening the safety of pedestrians in the area.

The specific section of the Burke Gilman Trail is an area where the trail is under construction and traffic is detoured between Brooklyn Avenue NE and Mason Road.  Police have seen about 61% of bicyclists not yield to pedestrians.  Officials are concerned walkers or runners may get hit by the bikers, or the bikers could get hit by a passing car.

The safety campaign will use social media, word of mouth, and other media to call attention to road safety.  Enforcement will begin at the end of the month.  Though the police hope they will not have to issue many tickets, officers will be prepared to do so.
