New I-405 Tolls

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has started construction on new toll lanes for Interstate 405 between Lynnwood and Bellevue.  The high traffic corridor has been overcrowded and the state believes the new plans will help alleviate one of the busiest freeways in the state.

The construction is for new variable toll lanes.  The new system will require vehicles to have three or more passengers in order to use the carpool lanes at peak travel times.  Officials say the current two-passenger minimum is not helping the carpool drivers.  They also say the new three passenger minimum is needed because of the transportation and population of the area.

The vehicles will also need a Flex Pass device or a Good to Go! pass.  The tolls will depend on the traffic flow at the time.  WSDOT is recommending tolls between 75 cents and $4.

Two variable toll lanes will be put in to run between Bothell and Bellevue.  Another one will run between Bothell and Lynnwood.  The lanes are expected to be open in the fall of 2015.
